The Story Behind ICRC…

As an authority, visionary, and leading expert in mediation and conflict resolution, I work as a practitioner, trainer, and educator in the field to re-imagine conflict from a destructive force to a transformative opportunity. I am a professor with over 23 years in the Department of Conflict Resolution Studies at Nova Southeastern University, one of the earliest graduate Ph.D. Conflict Resolution Programs in the nation established more than 30 years ago. I founded ICRC in 2007 to deliver a level of mediation and conflict resolution education to professionals in the public that most trainings simply cannot match. As editor of The Mediation Handbook: Theory, Research and Practice, I collaborated with leading experts in the mediation and conflict resolution field. I apply the most contemporary theory, research, and practice methods shaping mediation and conflict resolution today. I also bring extensive real-world experience, having mediated thousands of complex cases across circuit and family matters, including disputes that remained unresolved after other approaches failed. That combination of scholarship and practice is the signature foundation of all the offerings at ICRC.

ICRC is also shaped by my work in real-world, high-stakes conflict as an expert and recognized peacebuilder and mediator.  My work with Mediators Beyond Borders, includes engagements related to conflicts and wars in the Middle East and Ukraine, and I bring that lived complexity into everything we teach and do at ICRC. The signature element of all ICRC programs and services is that they are Transformative, Humanistic, and Multidisciplinary. Transformative means we focus on changing the interaction patterns that keep conflict stuck, so outcomes are sustainable, not just negotiated. Humanistic means we center compassion, dignity, voice, and psychological safety so parties feel empowerment and self determination. Multidisciplinary means we draw from the best of conflict resolution research, negotiation, communication, and relational dynamics across disciplines of study to address the real forces in conflict such as identity, narratives, culture, power, and history.

Whether you come to ICRC for mediation or conflict resolution training, you will experience an approach designed to transform people and conflict. Most importantly, you will be prepared to tackle conflict with not only the “know how”, but also with real competencies based on evidence-based best practices.
